4 Wedding Style Ideas for 2021 | What is Your Style?

April 28, 2021

When planning your big day, the choices can be a bit overwhelming, so the best way to start is by establishing an overall style. The style you choose helps determine every aspect of your wedding day from the venue to the décor and even to the types of photos we’ll take. One way to make this process a little easier is to define your wedding style based on what best fits your personality as a couple. This is your wedding day, after all. If a formal ballroom just isn’t your style, then go with something that is. You’ll be happier, and your photos will reflect that as well. As a New York wedding photographer, I’m happy to offer a few wedding style ideas to help you hone your vision.

Discover Your Wedding Style

This year’s top wedding style ideas include:

Classic and Traditional

The Dress – It’s classic for a reason – it never goes out of style! Brides who love the classic look typically choose a simple, white A-line wedding gown that looks chic, gorgeous, and elegant.

Invitations – A cream-colored invitation with black calligraphy writing is perfect for the traditional couple. Add a little shimmer if you want something extra!

Venue – A lovely hotel or country club ballroom offers an elegant and traditional ambiance. If you prefer an outdoor wedding, find an area with lots of greenery, and host your loved ones under a classic white tent.

Décor – Your wedding decorations should be simple but elegant. Try to use 2-3 colors that pair nicely, such as blue and white or dark green and blush pink. Include tasteful florals at each table but nothing too overwhelming or bright.

Whimsical Boho

Dress and Hair – Typically, bohemian wedding dresses feature lots of lace and flowers. Feel free to have fun and let loose with this bohemian theme! Many brides love to braid flowers into their hair or wear flower crowns for a whimsical look. A low, loose bun or all-natural hairstyles work well for the boho bride.

Décor – For this style, use greenery to your advantage. Think: beautiful trees and flowers all around. It will give your guests the feel of being transported into an enchanted forest. Hand-tied bouquets with an eclectic assortment of florals look amazing.

Venue – Intimate outdoor or tented spaces work well with a boho style. If you’re a New Yorker, Central Park has many spots for a quiet and romantic boho ceremony.

Cake – Unlike a traditional wedding, you may choose to add flowers and greenery to your first tasty treat as a married couple.

Modern, Urban, and Trendy

Dress – This wedding dress style tends to be sleek and form fitting. Check out the latest wedding dress styles, or even try a bridal pant suit, romper, or dress alternative (paired with some amazing shoes, of course.) While you may still want a white dress, your dress can also have an edgy feel with the right design and fabric.

Venue – Many couples of this wedding style choose to use a renovated warehouse as their industrial-inspired venue. This allows plenty of room for guests, dinner tables, and dancing while keeping with the urban vibe. I recommend checking out The Foundry.

Décor – Focus on lots of metal, exposed brick, and exposed lighting. You’ll want to use green plants and stick to neutral colors.

Upscale Luxury

Dress – Want to throw a celebration your guests will never forget? Now is your chance! Don’t be afraid to choose the gown with an extra-long train or one that features beaded details and extra sparkle. Intricate lace also looks extra luxe. This is your moment to shine!

Venue – This is New York! There are many appropriate venues for a luxury wedding style including: historic homes, ballrooms, hotels, iconic venues, and several others. A few of my favorites are 620 Loft & GardenThe William ValeThe Plaza Hotel, and The Four Seasons.

Décor – The phrase “less is more” doesn’t apply here. Feel free to add in stunning floral arrangements, gorgeous chandeliers, candles, and silk tablecloths. The possibilities are endless!

Cake – Why settle for a 3-tier cake when you could have six? Luxury cakes make such a statement, and many couples choose to cover them in beautiful florals and gold-leaf accents. However, a simple and elegant cake with just a bit of greenery works well with this style, too.

Extras – Offer valet service for guests, feature a flowing champagne fountain at your reception, or create extravagant goodie bags for each of your guests. These extra touches will give your wedding an even more upscale vibe.

Celebrate Your Marriage Your Way

Whatever wedding style ideas you choose, make sure to stay true to who you are as a couple. Then, just have fun with it! Defining your wedding style upfront will narrow down your choices and make wedding planning a bit easier. Time to celebrate!
